A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Night Side Of London From The Perspective Of Koller's Equivalence Theory

This thesis is an E-C translation report of several excerpts from The Night Side of London written by James Ewing Ritchie.Guided by the equivalence theory of Werner Koller,the translator analyses problems of achieving equivalence at lexical,communicative and textual levels,and also puts forward effective methods to handle these problems.Translation takes place between two languages.Studies on translation equivalence contribute to communication between these two languages and equivalence between the source and target texts.Being one of the core issues in western translation theories,translation equivalence has undoubtedly attracted many scholars at home and abroad.The Swiss linguist Werner Koller refines the concept of equivalence,proposes his equivalence theory,and defines five types of equivalence relations,namely,denotative,connotative,text-normative,pragmatic,and formal equivalence.In Koller's view,the translator should achieve equivalence at different levels because he is restricted by the source text and the communicative conditions of the receptor.On the basis of Koller's equivalence theory,the translator adopts some translation methods such as literal translation,literal translation with annotation,amplification,and modulation,discusses how to achieve denotative,connotative,pragmatic and formal equivalence thus achieving a better effect of equivalence between the two texts.
