Language is the important tool for communication. To facilitate the understanding, people make the language concise to the greatest extent. With the development of society, the content expressed by language has become more abundant and diverse, while the form of language becomes more concise, which is an important internal rule for language development.Abbreviation is a main means of word formation, and is frequently used by people in daily communication. Abbreviations accord with people's pragmatic psychology and purpose of pursuing economy and convenience in communication, that is, to express the maximum of information with the fewest language symbols and the easiest structure. They satisfy people's need to save time, labor and pursue efficiency in language communication. With more frequent exchange of China and Russian in economy and culture, it is necessary to make a multi-angle and multi-hierarchy study of Chinese and Russian abbreviations. A systematic study of the ways of Chinese and Russian abbreviation formation and the standardization of abbreviation use is of significance in both theory and practice.In this thesis, from the angles of contrastive linguistics and applied linguistics, first Russian abbreviations and Chinese abbreviations are defined. Then, the common ways of Chinese and Russian abbreviation formation are contrastively studied, and the similarities and differences of ways of abbreviation formation are summarized. The thesis ends with expounding the factors influencing the modern Chinese and Russian abbreviation use, the actual state of abbreviation use, principles of standardization. And some constructive suggestions for the standardization are provided.This thesis aims to make the Russian learners have a further understanding of ways of Russian and Chinese abbreviation formation, to facilitate the appropriate use of Russian and Chinese abbreviations, and consequently to achieve effective communication.
