The Study Of Russian Abbreviations In The Political Texts

Russian abbreviations play a significant role in the modern social and political life of Russia.However,the study of Russian abbreviations in political texts has so far drawn little interest not only in Russia but also in China.In fact,it is of great theoretical significance and practical value to study Russian abbreviations in political texts.Firstly,this study can further enrich the theoretical research of Russian word formation,Russian lexicology and Russian political linguistics.Secondly,the research results can help Chinese students better grasp Russian abbreviations and have a better understanding of the Russian political texts.Thirdly,it can be applied to Russian language teaching and helps to compile Russian abbreviations dictionaries.Finally,the study can guide the translations of Russian abbreviations and Russian political texts.This article relies on theories regarding the Russian word formation,Russian lexicology and Russian political linguistics.Besides,it is also based on the Russian abbreviations collected from "Izvestia," "Arguments and Facts," "Moskovsky Komsomolets" and other Russian well-known newspapers during 2014-2017.Using classification,semantic analysis,comparative analysis,induction and other research methods,we have done systematic research into Russian abbreviations in the political texts in many dimensions.This study analyzes Russian abbreviations from four aspects,i.e.definition,classification,function,translation method.In the first chapter,this study examines related concepts in order to provide a working definition of "Russian abbreviations" and "political text" for further analysis.Second chapter sets out from pronunciation,spelling,origin,sphere of use,and subject to create a classification of Russian abbreviations in political texts,coming up with the major features of Russian abbreviations.In the third chapter,this study considers in detail the four main functions of Russian abbreviations,i.e.economy,nomination,derivation,and expressive function.In the fourth chapter,the methods to translate abbreviations in political texts from Russian into Chinese are analyzed:the method of decoding,the method of decoding with abbreviation,the method of transcription and mixed translation.The findings of this thesis are as follows.First,Russian abbreviations not only include initialism,acronymy,half-acronymy,but also partial-acronymy,the last of which has not yet received its due attention.Second,there are different genres of political texts.They all function in the political sphere,connected with various political issues,focused directly or indirectly on the propagation of certain political views,intentions,opinions,and beliefs in order to have an intended impact on the readership.Third,Russian abbreviations in political texts have distinct features.In terms of pronunciation,Russian abbreviations fall into two categories,either spelling out the word as in initialism,or being read out as in acronymy.In terms of spelling,the overwhelming majority of Russian abbreviations are written in capital letters.In terms of origin,most Russian abbreviations are from Russian.In terms of use,the abbreviations not only come from the political field,but also other fields.In terms of subject,Russian abbreviations in political texts can be divided into different thematic categories,denoting the names of different countries,international organizations,political parties and institutions,companies,television channels and other organizations.Fourth,Russian abbreviations in political texts have four functions.It is economical in abbreviations save time and space.It is normative in that the abbreviated terms can refer to the original term.Abbreviations can be derivative.Both the grammaticalized and non-grammaticalized abbreviations can further word formation.The expressive function of Russian abbreviations is achieved by the unusual interpretation of the abbreviation,and the convergence of the abbreviation with the usual word for expressing one's opinions,views and beliefs.Fifth,when translating Russian abbreviations in political texts,you need select the appropriate one from the following four methods:the method of decoding,the method of decoding with abbreviation,the method of transcription and mixed translation.
