Wen Tong is a great famous artist for his poem, Fu, calligraphy and paintings in the primary and middle stage of north Song. Though his reputation on poetry is not good as drawing, the before one has still unique attainment. At that time, Su Shi claims that he has "four superior unique skills" and the achievement of poem is the first. Many poems of Wen Tong describe his official life to be looked like isolating himself from the whole society. He lives a complex Li Yin life which is the outcome of times, personal reasons, the mutual influence of fierce struggle on party and the three kind of main religions, for instance, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Influenced by this kind of psychology, his poems incline to pursuit peace and discard sorrow. The subject of Wen Tong's poems is rich, and the type is various. The poems may be divided into five types approximately: the poetry on describing society, the poetry on describing scene, the poetry on describing things, the poetry on describing picture and the poetry on seeing person off. His poetry has the characteristic of Song dynasty's tone, such as thinking highly of reason and reducing feelings, taking prose as poetry, and taking comment as poetry, etc. And his poems has the characteristic of Tang dynasty's tone, such as fresh language, extremely hot feelings, and thinking highly of creating the artistic conception feelings, etc. The diversified style of Tang's tune and Song's tune appears on a poet at the same time which have reflected that Song's tune assume the huge leadership role on poetry platform, and also explained that shape of Song's tune has a long and difficult process. So Wen Tong has special position in Song dynasty, and he offers his spirit to shape Song's tune.
