At present the development of Chinese national vocal music is still constrained by the academistic "Western or Chinese" controversy. This has virtually ignored the rich contents in Chinese national vocal music that derive from folk music. Based on the historical aesthetic background and historical development process of Chinese national vocal music, the thesis expounds the importance to reserve the original folk songs and traditional Chinese opera for inheriting Chinese national cultural traditions, and points out the "gap" and difference between Western and Chinese vocal music through a contrastive study, thus disclosing the unfair nature of the model that adopts the cultural evolution theory as its epistemological base. The thesis points out that it is incomprehensive to depend too much on the analysis of cultural cause from a technical perspective; instead we should use theories of other disciplines related to music to explore the unique values that distinguish the subject from the object, so that we can distinguish what we should draw on from what we should inherit and can make different music cultures draw on each other's merits and make up for each other's deficiencies. The thesis concludes that Chinese national vocal music should follow a path of "plural development" .
