Vocabulary learning plays a key role in the second language acquisition. Despite the fact that scholars at home and abroad have conducted many studies in this field, many aspects remain untouched. Most of the studies are done in colleges and in secondary schools, but few studies are concentrated on how HVTE students acquire second language vocabulary.In order to make it clear about the vocabulary learning process of HVTE students, the author has conducted the following survey on 128 students who are studying English as a foreign language, and 100 valid questionnaires were taken as the original data. The result of the survey shows that most HTVE students follow an unstructured approach and employ a narrow range of vocabulary learning strategies. There are also differences in vocabulary learning strategies between more successful and less successful learners.In the following part, some vocabulary learning strategies that are of importance for HTVE students will be discussed. They are strategies such as metacognitive strategies, dictionary look-up, constant review, recognition of prefixes and roots, and the use of computer multimedia & Internet resources. Besides, the author believes that teachers can have a major effect on learning. Some vocabulary teaching strategies are also suggested.In the end, the author points out the limitations of the study, and suggests some ideas for further research.
