| With the gradual development of economic globalization in today's world, cultural globalization is becoming more and more prominent, too. Cultural globalization in itself means mutual exchanges and development of different cultures and is the representation of cultural diversity. However, in this process a few western developed countries, especially the United States, pursue a strategy of cultural hegemony to retain their ascendancy. Faced with the situation, the author thinks that Chinese translators should take up a new historical mission, that is, how to resist American cultural hegemony effectively in the translation process to preserve Chinese culture, for translation is not only interlingual communication, but cultural communication. Translation is expected not just to convey the meaning of the source text, but to transfer its cultural information. Only by doing so can every culture get an equal opportunity for communication and development. Therefore, to resist American cultural hegemony and to spread and develop Chinese culture, this paper aims to advocate the proper employment of foreignization strategy in the translation process. And this paper mainly provides some relevant principles from Skopos Theory and Relevance Theory for the necessity and feasibility of foreignizing translation in cultural globalization, attempting to end the long-term debate over the superiority or inferiority of foreignization and domestication. But of course, foreignizing translation is notomnipotent and has its own limitations. The translator should take into account before translation the target reader's acceptability, cognitive environment and the text types of the source text. And then he can decide whether to employ foreignizing translation or not. In a word, Chinese translators should do their best to adopt foreignization strategy in the new global situation and meanwhile should not use it at will without considering its limitations. |
