A sociolinguistic survey was carried out to study the Pudong civil servants andteachers' language capabilities, performances and attitudes and the correlation amongthe three. We had 2182 questionnaires in all with availability.This thesis consists of six parts.The first chapter introduces the sociolinguistics research findings about languagecapabilities, performances and attitudes and the correlation among the three. And theorigin of the thesis and the details about the statistical data were also presented here.The second chapter analyses informants' language capabilities, including theMandarin level, the correlation between dialect and Mandarin level and theimprovement of the Mandarin capability.The third chapter analyses informants' language performances, including whichlanguage is in common use, how the frequency of Mandarin has changed, theMandarin register and the circumstances of Mandarin performance in work.The fourth chapter analysis informants' language attitudes, including how theyevaluate Mandarin, why somebody is unwilling to speak Mandarin, doping out thelanguage positions in the future and attitudes towards the relationship between dialectand Mandarin.The fifth chapter is the most important and valuable part of the thesis, discussing thecorrelation among language capabilities, performances and attitudes. Standing on oneof them, we discuss the correlation towards the other two. Excepting for groupingdifferent samples, evaluating the questionnaires is also used to deal with the data.The sixth chapter is a complement to give advices to the future research in this fieldand to the Mandarin- popularizing project.
