English Slang Translation In Functional View

Slang, the colorful, irreverent, sometimes offensive language of informal speech, is an integral part of everyday life: it makes itself heard not only in the street, at the bar, but in the prison, the pulpit and even in the House of Parliament. Slang has also largely entered the written documents such as literary works, newspapers, and magazines. As slang is used by every class, and as this fact is now everywhere recognized, it is quite normal, justifiable, and challenging to study slang, the increasingly active strength of language. However, the translations of English are far from satisfying and that translators do not seem to have made a thorough and systematic study on the translation of English slang into Chinese. Thus, this paper takes a particular perspective on slang translation and follows this through to guiding principles and possible strategies for its translation.Functionalist theories put forward by some German scholars in the 1970s has opened up a new perspective to translation studies.Taking functionalist theories as a theoretical framework, this thesis discusses the features and formation of English slang and tries to propose several strategies for translating English slang based on the functional eqivalence: transliteration, literation, literal translation, free translation, substitution, paraphrasing, image transforming, back translation...
