Abstract/Summary:
The materials the report adopted are selected from Brave Girl,Quiet Girl,a novel. It is mainly about a mother whose two-year-old daughter is missing within a night. This story is narrated from the perspectives of both this mother and another sixteen-year-old homeless girl who picks the lost little girl up by accident. The author hopes to reveal the phenomenon of the long existing bias against the homeless in America through the novel and suggests the reasons for the widespread “homeless problem” around the country. This translation practice report focuses on the translation of English slang under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s Theory of Functional Equivalence.English Slang, with its novelty, vividness and humor, has become one of the most active, expressive and appealing language forms in English.Slang abounds in films, literature, newspapers and magazines. Therefore,it is of significance for English learners and users to understand the meaning of slang in target languages. In the early 18 th century, the Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Nida has created some new opportunities for the translation of English slang, which transfers the English slang translation from the linguistic level or formal “loyalty” to a deeper level of “equivalence”.According to the Functional Equivalence Theory, semantic equivalence, cultural equivalence and stylistic equivalence are the three basic principles that translators should follow in slang translation. However, due to the limitations and timeliness of slang itself, some slang expressions may only come into being but die within a short period of time, which brings great challenges to translators.Under the guidance of Nida’s Theory of Functional Equivalence and following the three principles of equivalence, this paper proposes some effective strategies for slang translation: literal translation, free translation, and interpreting, extending and simultaneous translation. The study of English slang and its translation strategies will not only help to build a bridge for cross-cultural communication, but also is beneficial to the creating of more inclusive and sustainable cultural products in a multicultural context.
