Bronze ware decoration patterns are the designs decorated on the bronze wares,it has great varieties ,and change are complex and diverse. In the middle and latter part of Spring and Autumn Period, the development of bronze ware decoration patterns reached its second peak, with the features of great varieties, high artistry and aesthetic value.The Yellow River Valley was one of the centers of China in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties as well as the most developed region in bronze ware decoration patterns in Spring and Autumn Period. The valley included three regions, viz. Guanzhong region, Mid-China and Shandong region from upstream to downstream. The decoration patterns in the three regions bore some similarities but also had many differences. The study of the decoration patterns in the three regions in Spring and Autumn Period will clarify their differences. The study is significant in understanding the transformation of societyl and the changes in thinking and culture in Spring and Autumn Period.The thesis includes five chapters:Chapter One classifies the bronze ware decoration patterns in the three regions. The author made four categories: animal pattern, plant pattern, geometric pattern and figure pattern. Emphases will be put on figure and geometric patterns. A development pedigree of decoration patterns is established through further classifications of the two categories, and specific periods in which the patterns prevailed are determined.Chapter Two classifies the regions and periods in which the decoration patterns prevailed. The classification of regions is based on the excavation sites, which fall into three regions: Guanzhong region, Mid-China and Shandong region. After that the scope of each region is determined. The classification of periods is based on the content, pattern and style of the decoration, and patterns in each region will be further classified into three periods. The feature of each period will be summarized and time span of each period be determined.Chapter Three is the comparative study of the decoration patterns. The author analyzes their similarities and differences through the comparison of combinations. Take the animal and geometric pattern as the example, the study analyzes the similarities and differences of the combinations in three regions. Chapter Four does the comparative research to the development evolution of decoration patterns and the local history culture.The author compares the causes which resulted in the differences of these decoration patterns through an analysis of the impetus of the development of decoration patterns in the three regions from early to latter part of Spring and Autumn Period.
