Metaphor, as an important topic in the research of rhetoric, has enjoyed a long history of investigation. The new cognitive approach further broadens our understanding of the nature of metaphor. Metaphor is not only a rhetoric phenomenon, but also a cognitive mechanism. According to the statistics, 70% of the lexical meanings originate from metaphor in language (Zhao Yanfang, 2001).Therefore, metaphor can also be found in the relatively precise, objective, and clear scientific and technological discourse. This provides new proof for us to do further research on both English words for science and technology (EST) and metaphor. Science and technology is the impetus for the development of the human society. It not only greatly changes our life, but also brings many new scientific and technological terms to our vocabulary. There are a large number of English words for science and technology (EST) from different resources, for most of which metaphor provides a cognitive explanation. This paper tries to study words for science and technology (EST) from a conceptual metaphorical point of view.There are six chapters in the thesis. The first chapter introduces the definition of metaphor, the definition of EST and the organization of the thesis. The second chapter presents a literature review of researches on both metaphor and metaphor of EST. Generally speaking, there have already been a lot of metaphor researches in scientific and technological vocabulary in the west, some of which have linguistically achieved a lot. But researches like this are insufficient in China. This is also the reason for the choice of this topic. The metaphor of EST plays a very important role in the human society, but its nature has always been a problem to many linguists and philosophers.
