With the development of the society, international communication seems to be of greater importance. The accompanying cultural globalization challenges the traditional translation studies. Nowadays, various researches have contributed to the new idea that translation is not transformation on the word for word level, but interpretation of culture. Scholars have long argued that the move from literary studies to cultural studies is an inevitable, ongoing process. Sussan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere proposed the theory of Cultural Turn, which timely meets the needs of culture assimilation and cross-culture communication. It thus causes translation to enjoy a renaissance in the world. This thesis firstly begins with a brief introduction, which includes the importance of this study, the methodology, and the structure of the thesis. The second chapter is the literature review. It mainly focuses on the concepts of culture and cultural turn with a careful study of its background and causes. Following that, Chapter Three analyzes the Chinese and English idioms, which are heavily loaded with cultural information, and introduces a number of strategies for English translation of Chinese idioms. In Chapter Four, by contrastive approach to domestication and foreignization, the thesis attempts to emphasize the application of foreignizing method in Chinese idiom translation with the aim of promoting Chinese culture in mind. The last chapter is a conclusion, which presents the major finding, the limitation and the suggestion for further research.
