Focusing on the arduous problem of college English learning in China—"Dumb English", the purpose of this thesis is an attempt to apply the communicative approach to college oral English classroom by communicative activities to improve college students' spoken English proficiency. The opening part is an introduction of College English Curriculum Requirements (for Trial Implementation) issued by Higher Education Department of Education Ministry in 2004, pointing out that the objective of college English teaching has now been concentrated on cultivating learners' practical ability of language use, i.e. oral competence. After a probe into the literature of the communicative approach, an experimental study is conducted with two natural classes enrolled on September, 2005 at Putian University in Fujian Province. The experiment lasts for a semester. Questionnaires and interviews are adopted as instruments. After the experiment, the data collected are put into computer and analyzed together with the researcher's interpretation. By the statistical analysis, the results prove that the communicative approach is accepted by the students, and to some extent, it could improve the students' oral English.
