In German literature history, Thomas Mann is a great writer across the 19th and 20th century. Observing all his works, there's an eternal spiritual essence: his concern for 'artists' dilemma'.Taking the artist figures in the works as examples, the 'artists' dilemma' is divided into two categories: one lies in the external society, the other is rooted in the internal spiritual world. In reality, these artists have to face the double identification of artist and the son of bourgeoisie, the clash between arts passion and worldly society as well as the desperate love. And in their spiritual world, albeit with the nice dream of aesthetic resumption, they're threatened with the crisis of aesthetic modernism. On one hand, they maintain their independence through beauty of arts, resume the nature of humanity and create miracles out of ordinary life. On the other hand, they suffer from the decadence, more and more separate themselves from life, and even degenerate. On the question of 'artists' dilemma', Thomas Mann always insists on his independent and transcendental thinking. As an artist, he reflects his own feelings on the story figures. But there's more criticism than sympathy given. Positively, Mann realizes that the ration and moral are indispensable parts of artists' ideal characters. Moreover, the history shift from tradition to modernism provides him with a new perspective to observe 'arts and life'. Although his dream of perfect artists isn't realized in his works, his thinking on 'artists' dilemma' pushes German 'artist fiction' to a new height.
