Rachel Carson is a famous marine biologist and bestseller writer of America. "Silent Spring", published in 1962, was not only the representative work about ecological literature and ecological ethics of Carson, but also was the classics in the world environmental literatures. In this book, Carson used plentiful of facts and data to describe how DDT and the other chemical goods entered the food chain and finally caused the global pollution and the ecology crisis. At the meantime, she questioned some ideas, like "conquer the nature" or "control the nature" and the extremely arrogant manner of modern people, expressed the "non-anthropocentrism". " Silent Spring" brought the huge impact to the American society. It directly caused the federal government to ban the DDT and promoted the government to establish a series of laws in environment protection. The most important is that "Silent Spring" aroused the environmental consciousness of people and it started a tremendous environmental protection movement in the whole world, which still continued today. Because of her great contribution, Carson is called "Mother of the modern environmental protection movement", and the "Silent Spring" is also regarded the origin of the environmental movement. For China's government and the general citizen, studying Carson and her "Silent Spring" have obvious significanceThis thesis consists of five parts:The first part reviews the environmentalism and the protection practice from 19th century in America and points out their limitations and shortages in different stage. The second part mostly explains the reasons of Carson writing "Silent Spring". Through analyzing the serious environmental circumstance and Carson's experiences and her principles to demonstrate the chanciness and inevitability of "Silent Spring".The third part discusses the Carson's environmental ethics in "Silent Spring", including consciousness of environment, nature holistic theory and so on, which reflected into practice is her "non-anthropocentrism".The fourth part describes the huge impact of "Silent Spring" for both of America and the world and analyses why it brought such great influence through Carson's own causation and the background of the society at that time.The fifth part points out the realistic significance of Carson and "Silent Spring" for China. On one hand, it is redound to turn Chinese government's conception, increasing the power to protect the environment; On the other hand, it can improve consciousness of protection environment in our society, and promote the development of environment protection in China.
