A Correlation Study Between Senior High School Students' Spoken English Communicative Competence And Their Language Learning Strategies Based On The New English Curriculum Standards

The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017Edition)puts forward clear requirements for senior high school students.One of the training goals in English is to enable students to communicate with others in spoken English.However,spoken English has always been the weakness of students.How to improve students' spoken English communicative competence and master language learning strategies have become a pressing task and a great challenge at present.Many previous researchers have attached importance to the relationship between students' English achievement and language learning strategies,but there are relatively fewer studies focused on the relationship between specific English skill and language learning strategies.On the basis of previous studies,the author first used spoken English test and questionnaires to test students' spoken English communicative competence and the current situation of language learning strategies,then discussed the relationship between spoken English communicative competence and language learning strategies.Finally,factors influencing students' choices of language learning strategies are interpreted in the interview section.The research subjects are 91 students in Grade 2 Class(4)and Class(5)from Ningcheng senior high school in Chifeng.The thesis includes three research questions.First,what is the current situation of senior high school students' spoken English communicative competence? Second,what is the present situation of language learning strategies used by senior high school students? Third,is there a correlation between spoken English communicative competence and language learning strategies of senior high school students? The results of this study are as follows: 1.In terms of the composing elements of students' spoken English communicative competence,the intonation score is higher than that of grammar,and the next one is content,then appropriateness,and fluency is the worst.Additionally,there is a significant difference between male and female students in spoken English communicative competence and the composing elements.2.Among the four learning strategies,most students prefer formal practicing strategies,and the next one is native language strategies,followed by communication strategies and functional practicing strategies.Male and female students have differences on the using frequencies of language learning strategies.3.There are significant positive correlations between formal practicing strategies and the composing elements of communicative competence in spoken English as well as the total score.Functional practicing strategies are positively correlated with pronunciation,grammar and fluency in spoken Englishcommunicative competence,and significantly correlated with appropriateness and the total score.There are negative correlations between native language strategies and grammar and content in spoken English communicative competence,and there are significant negative correlations between native language strategies and the total score.There are significant positive correlations between communication strategies and pronunciation,intonation,fluency,appropriateness and the total score.Based on the research results,the author gave some suggestions from angles of learner's own factors,language teaching methods and language learning environment.Besides,the author put forward some suggestions,such as reforming the evaluation system of English teaching,choosing appropriate language learning strategies and strengthening students' learning motivation,hoping to provide some enlightenment and inspiration for future English teaching and learning.
