As a great litterateur, Dostoevsky is a talent surpassing ages. The theatricality of his novels is based on the following issues: Firstly, the novel has been continuously affected by dramas. Specifically, Characters' personalities have been more self-determined, with their motivations of action getting much clearer. Secondly, the tradition of realism in Russian literature urged Russian novelists to focus on characters' psychological being. This explored ever deeper from Pushkin to Dostoevsky in the novelists' descriptions. They prefer to make the events happen and end in an extremely short time rather than for a long period of time, which gave rise to a new meaning of time and space in the novels. Thirdly, obviously Dostoevsky himself showed great interests in dramas written by Shakespeare, Schiller, Pushkin and Gvogeli, which could be witnessed by his letters, essays, biographies and even his own novels.Since the Brothers Karamazov, considered the masterpiece of Dostoevsky, is more theatrical than ever, this thesis attempts to discuss the theatricality of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky's novels based on this one. In the discussion, the following points will be emphasized: theatrical structures, simple plots, lots of suddenness and dialogues, role groups, and aesthetic feelings of tragedies. This thesis explores the most significant features that marked Dostoevsky as the writer who changed the face of novel.
