Study On Innovation Of Traditional Costume Through Decorative Language Of Sleeves

To reach the innovation of the traditional clothing we must carry out the theoretical analysis of three aspects, namely, the traditional clothing-historical culture, the Western clothing development conditions as well as the current time characteristics to get the correct conclusion. From all of these three aspects, this article has performed the historical analysis and theoretical elaboration to the traditional clothing innovation from a design viewpoint. With decorative language of traditional sleeves as our research focus, this paper deeply analyzes the sleeve's characteristics in 5 aspects such as the performance forming, process, materials, colors, and patterns having embodied during its evolution course. We also take the sleeves of Western dresses for horizontal contrast, and then from the differences between Chinese traditional costumes and Western dresses, find out our advantages and disadvantages. Through a thorough thinking of the current time characteristics, this paper elaborates the innovation direction of Chinese traditional clothing at this stage, to which we must complete the transformation from form to content: (1) Rationally research the individual characteristics of Chinese and Western clothing, while grasping the Chinese traditional essence; (2) Scientifically absorb the development experience of Western clothing, and set up the humanist design idea; (3) Artistically embody the spirit of the age, and conform to the contemporary life style. Finally, this paper presents the application principles of traditional costumes decoration language in contemporary costume design: (1) Shape Modeling– the combination of three-dimensional and planar models; (2) Making Process - mutual complementation of high-tech and craft;(3) Materials selection - rich visual effects; (4) color richness - keeping up with the times; (5) Patterns out of new ideas - using metaphorical skill; (6) leisure decoration - pop culture style. This paper has used analyses of the historical documents, comparison, induction, deduction and exemplification in the research process.
