What is unique for a nation is also precious for the world. In 1950s or 1960s, many animated cartoons that had traditional Chinese folk elements enjoyed a famous reputation both at home and abroad. Any good cartoon must embody the locality and ethnicity of its nation in order to become widely accepted internationally. Traditional Chinese folk costume elements reflect the brilliant Chinese civilization with its magnificent and profound taste. The study on traditional Chinese folk costume elements can not only pass down the traditional culture of the Chinese nation but also provide sources for cartoons that can give an expression of Chinese nation.The images of cartoon characters are the soul of cartoons and the success of the images directly determine the success of the whole cartoon. Costume design plays an important role in embodying the outer beauty of character image. Meanwhile, the costume of characters can also reflect the personality of the characters as well as the historical background of the plot in the cartoon, leaving a preliminary impression on audiences through the costume of characters. Therefore, the costume design of images of cartoon characters is of vital significance.This paper, focusing on the application of folk decorative elements in costume design of cartoon characters, elaborates on the present situation and existing problems of Chinese cartoons, the impact of traditional costume on cartoon costume design, the characters and aesthetics of cartoon costume, forms and embodiment of traditional folk decorative elements in cartoon costume design and the application of folk decorative elements in costume design of cartoon characters. Taking the design aesthetics as the theoretical background, this paper analyzes the important impact of folk decorative elements on cartoon costume design. Based on the characteristics of traditional costume and various forms of folk decorative elements, it generalizes the application forms of traditional decorative elements in costume of cartoon character images and demonstrates the significance of the application of folk decorative elements in cartoon costume design through analogy or exemplification.The study on the application of traditional folk decorative elements in cartoon costume design witnesses the changes of Chinese folk decorative patterns and many valuable and rich cultural connotations. This is a question worthy of consideration as to how to apply these folk decorative elements into the cartoon works innovatively but not simply copy them. Only in this way can we make innovations continuously and created cartoon works that bear the characteristics of Chinese nation and the times. The application of the abstracted folk decorative elements into costume design of cartoon character images after being processed artistically can reflect the personality of the characters, their outer beauty as well as beauty of Chinese nation in the world arena.
