Since their survival from the conceptualized mode influenced by"Cultural Revolution", the traditional Chinese painting, oil painting and woodcut have all showed a booming future in artistic expressions, including not only realism, romanticism, expressionism, but also symbolism, surrealism,"New Generation"painting, cynical realism and even gaudy art etc. However, for years, the watercolor painting in China has been stayed constant in such subject matters as scenery, inanimate objects and portraits within the categories of realism and romanticism, far less varied and rich in artistic expression than that of other painting forms.Through the comparison of historical developments between watercolor and other mainstream paintings, the thesis analyzes the developmental process of modern and contemporary arts in China, discusses the general tendency of the development in contemporary arts and looks into various reasons for causing the various problems abovementioned in watercolor. Moreover, the thesis takes the view that watercolor is the most potential painting presenting the purest art language in the most environmentally friendly form. It is predicted that the watercolor painting will develop into an artistic expression mainly relying on realism with modernism as its assistance, rather than a contemporary art form. What's more, this unique form of painting is coming into its full bloom soon.
