English is one of the most important practical courses. And how to improve the students' English listening and speaking competence is concerned by the whole society at present. The author carried out a one-year-long experiment on the teaching of strategies for practicing oral English in which 81 freshmen in the higher vocational schools are the subjects.The author tried to analyze the common problems in cognitive strategies, affective strategies and communicative strategies among the freshmen in the professional vocational schools. In view of the existing problems, the author gives some advice on how to solve the problems, the author also conducts a long-term English strategies training in order to improve the students' oral expression competence.Firstly, the author expounds the importance of improving the listening and speaking competence especially the oral expression competence of the freshmen in the higher vocational schools. Teachers must develop proper strategies for practicing oral English and ensure the use of the strategies in students' self-access learning, which can promote the students' self-confidence, interest and oral expression competence, which can speed the internalization of the second language, the storage of the second language and the use of the second language. The use of the strategies will also promote the ability of language application and the consciousness of self-access learning among the students in the higher vocational schools, which can satisfy the demand of the 21 century economy development.Secondly, the author defines two key terms—the competence of oral expression and language learning strategies. Then the author introduces the study on language learning strategies in China and abroad, the classification and training methods of language learning strategies. After that, the author chooses her own study target and methods—To adopt a combined way to do a research on cognitive strategies, affective strategies and communicative strategies which will be combined with the teaching task, the teaching objective and the text book. Moreover, group training and individual direction will be used to strengthen the students' strategy consciousness.Thirdly, the author analyzes the main problems in the strategies for practicing oral English among the freshmen in the professional vocational through questionnaire, communication and observation along with the teaching experience in middle school. The author concludes that there exist some common problems in cognitive strategies, affective strategies and communicative strategies. Then the author introduces some strategies of teaching to solve the problems. For example, in cognitive strategies, the author focuses great attention on the teaching of English elementary knowledge, assigning the students to do a good preparation before class and encouraging the students to collect information by different means.In the end, the author draws a conclusion. The author considers the study on the teaching of strategies for practicing oral English among the freshmen in the professional vocational schools by training cognitive strategies, affective strategies an communicative strategies is available , the ability of language application , the communicative ability and the consciousness of self-access learning have been greatly improved among the students in the higher vocational schools.
