A Study On The Literary Celebrities' Bearing In The Wei-jin Period From Historical And Contemporary Perspectives

The connotation of this "bearing" in the Wei-jin Period, going through rejection, misunderstanding, imagination, and pursuit, has become a term. The internal feature of it is so closely related to its specific history and the specific literary celebrities, but to a larger degree, it is more determined by modern researchers' collective construing of it.The first part of this thesis analyzes the formation of the spiritual connotation of the bearing of the literary celebrities in Wei—jin Period, during which the term—bearing had changed from a negative sense of dissolution to a positive one. By going through Caocao's unconventional and carefree style to Ruanji's broad—minded style, the literary celebrities bearing had turned from pragmatism to aestheticism. The poetic metaphysics nurtured the artistic life of the literary celebrities. There are two aspects concerning the connotation of bearing of the literary celebrities in Wei—jin Period: on the one hand, it refers to its social connotation, that is, it is the outcome of the spiritual liberation of that time; on the other hand, it refers to its aesthetic and poetic meaning, that is, it is the representation of those celebrities' personalities and spirits, which conveyed the aesthetics of the writings of those celebrities. To be specific, it carries the characteristics of metaphysics of the mind, wildness of the spirit, and carefree of the body. In all, scholars should use the term from various perspectives.The second part of this thesis combs the acceptance of the bearing of the literary celebrities in Wei—jin Period. The time from Wei—jin Period to the middle of Tang Dynasty is the first peak responding period to bearing of the literary celebrities in Wei—jin Period. The time from the late Tang Dynasty to Nothern Song Dynasty is the period of silence and rediscovery of the bearing of the literary celebrities in Wei—jin Period. The time from Yuan Dynasty to the late Ming Dynasty is the period for the convergence of the gentility and folk style of the bearing and for the differentiation of it. The time from the late Qing Dynasty to 1930s or 1940s is the second peak responding to the bearing. From 1980s till now, on the basis of modern despondence and under the diversified values situation, the meaning of the bearing has taken a trend of complexity.The third part if this thesis is the modern study on the term bearing. With the focus on modern discourse and aestheticism, the author discusses the humanity of the term, the connection between the term and wine drinking, the revelry of the term, arguing for the modern side if it by pointing the possibilities and effectiveness of studying it from modern perspective.
