Many scholars pay great attention to Xiao Hong's famous works, Field of the Life and Death and the Story of Hu Lan River. Field of the Life and Death is a typically document of the times. And the story of Hu Lan River is a recollection of the life in the small town in her childhood. Both of them represent the writer's love to her homeland. This dissertation illustrates these two novels of Xiao Hong from three aspects by using psychoanalysis, close reading and narratology: the complexity of nostalgic complex in her subjective consciousness, the peculiar regional culture of the Northeastern China, and the multi-angle and the cultural connotation of the narration.Main body of the dissertation consists of three parts. Chapter one: By analyzing Xiao Hong's lifetime and her experience of the literary creation, the dissertation attempts to interpret the nostalgic complex and its influence on her creations from the aspect of her role as a refugee. And the contradictional narration of her hometown manifests her complicated feelings of love and hate to her hometown. She criticizes her hometown while showing her love to the hometown because of missing. Hometown is the source of Xiao Hong's inspiration. The second part mainly illustrates the regional custom and the folk images in her novels from the view of the characteristics of regional culture. Xiao Hong not only shows the everyday life of the farmers, but also gets into their deep life and spirit. By depicting the folk custom, she points out the historical and cultural causes leading to the lack of living forces in the spirit of the northeast people. In the third part, the dissertation analyses the specialty and the cultural connotation of the narration from the view that she used in her works—nationalistic nature, female vision and the children's vision. Xiao nong inherits Lu Xun's exploration of nationalistic nature. By depicting women's experience of "bearing and death", Xiao Hong reveals the living conditions andtragic fates of the women who are at the bottom of the society and criticizes theman-centered culture. Xiao Hong's depicting of "back garden, grandfather andme" in her novels is a retrospect of her own childhood, which shows heraspiration of the spirit return.
