Fuzzy Language Translation In Literary Works-With Special Reference To British Fiction

Fuzziness is an intrinsic feature shared by most languages, capturing people's attention long ago. Researches on fuzzy language, nevertheless, can date back to L.A.Zadeh's thesis about"fuzzy set", published in Information and Control in 1965. Since then, interest in its use and meaning has mushroomed within a number of disciplines: linguistics, psychology, philosophy, and literary criticism. In China, Wu Tieping is hailed as the pioneer of fuzzy linguistics. His masterpiece entitled Fuzzy Linguistics and a number of other papers published afterwards have aroused domestic linguists'enormous attention and enthusiasm and encouraged them to dedicate themselves to related researches and studies. Scholars both in China and abroad have done significant, indepth and comprehensive researches into language fuzziness and have made insightful achievements in this field. With regard to the translating of fuzzy language, the studies already done up till today mainly concentrate on the skills or strategies of translating fuzzy language as well as the relationship between fuzzy language and translation. The vast majority of studies, however, focus on the perspective of pragmatics and culture. Moreover, Chinese literary works, especially the classical ones, are the main resources referenced.On the basis of the studies already done on fuzzy language, the present author narrows and analyzes fuzzy language translation with reference to high-profile translators'versions of some classic American and British literary works. It explores three strategies for translating fuzzy language from two basic levels of language. Subsequently, five commonly-used techniques are analyzed. The focus of this thesis is the analysis of the fuzzy language translation in classic British fiction from three dimensions of portrayal. Liu Zhongde's translation principle is the basis of the evaluation of the translation referred to.The thesis falls into five parts:The"introduction"reviews scientific studies and researches on fuzzy language both in China and abroad and makes clear the significance of this research. To serve the purpose of this thesis, a specific definition of it is offered.Chapter one illustrates language fuzziness in literary works and elaborates three strategies applied in translating words and phrases in literary works, the two basic language levels of fuzzy language. The strategies are as follows: fuzziness versus fuzziness, preciseness versus fuzziness, and fuzziness versus preciseness.Chapter two is dedicated to demonstrating five commonly-employed techniques in translating fuzzy language from a microscopic perspective, including diction, amplification, explanation, extension, and conversion. Chapter three is the focus of this thesis. In particular, three dimensions of descriptions in fiction are demonstrated to illustrate fuzzy language translation. The dimensions illustrated are scenery depiction, character portrayal, and psychological description. Concerning the depiction of scenery, the present thesis highlights the use of the personification, the most remarkable feature of the portrayal of Egdon Heath, which is the setting of The Return of the Native, and the proper use of addition. With regard to the portrayal of fictional characters, the present thesis places emphasis upon the domestication of translation and the flexible reshuffling of the fuzzy sentences in the translation of Vanity Fair. In the analysis of fuzzy language translation within the dimension of psychology, proper use of addition and domestication are delved into with reference to the novel Mrs. Dalloway.The"conclusion"summarizes what has been discussed in the present thesis on fuzzy language translation and concludes that the successful translation of literary works is largely dependent upon that of the fuzzy language. Finally, five proposals regarding fuzzy language translation have been presented.
