Fuzziness is the essential characteristic of natural language.Linguists pay highly attention to fuzziness owing to its overwhelming significance and innumerable great achievements are gained. The study of fuzzy language provokes the appearance of Zadeh's Fuzzy Sets, and on the contrary,Fuzzy Sets makes theoretical foundation for the fields of science where involve fuzziness, and of course Translation Studies are the first too be affected a lot.On the other hand, translation studies as an independent branch of linguistics, its development is also thriving.Cultural Turn,a new turn in contemporary translation studies, focus on cultural communication functions, which mean that translation as a cross-cultural communication activity, involving not only the simple conversion of the two languages, but the collision, communication and running of two cultures. What is more, fuzziness makes barriers to the cross-cultural communication activity and brings challenges and opportunities to translation practice.Fuzzy language can be applied not only in communication activities, but also widely used in literary works.Fuzzy language is hazy and ambiguous in the description of things, its own properties as helpful works of literature create a gap for readers and leave enough space for them to interpret and imagine. Thus, most of the literature works attach great importance to the use of fuzzy language. However, translation studies of fuzzy language focus mainly on other genres of translation, such as articles related to law and science, speeches of celebrities and daily conversation yet pay little attention to literature works, let alone the causes of fuzziness in literature works.Hua Jianji, one of the ten talented masterpieces in Ming and Qing Dynasties,is a unique love story in form of saying and singing style with special local characteristics of Guangdong. It is widely circulated as one of the western cannons in the West, yet rated as "perfunctory 'love affair' folk tale libretto," "non-classic " in China which is treated brutally cold. There are two translated versions, one is Peter Perring Thoms' Chinese Courtship in1824 and the other is Sir John Bowring's the Flowery Scroll in 1868.In recent years, there are several research papers about Tang's translation, and only a few scholars studyBowring's version.Based on the handful of translation studies about fuzzy language in literature;Hua Jianji is the representative of Guangdong Muh Yu containing a lot of fuzzy phenomena, therefore Bowring's translation has certain research value.Fuzzy theories are taken as the framework of this thesis, the scope of the study is narrowed and defined, with research method by combing a qualitative analysis and deduction, fuzzy languages in the Hua Jianji are screened, classified and compared with the translated version. The result turns out that fuzzy phenomena in Hua Jianji mainly concentrates on linguistic(semantic and pragmatic fuzziness),rhetoric(metaphor and euphemism)and culture(culture images and allusions)fuzziness.Bowring flexibly applies various translation strategies to deal with those fuzziness, possibly retains the original fuzziness so as to create enough space for the target language readers to interpret and imagine. Therefore, when translating literature works, fuzzy language as part of the work is required an in-depth study of its rich connotation and infinite denotation,as well as the cultural background.Translators can flexibly employ translation strategies including thick translation(notes, preface, inner text explanation and outer text explanation),fuzzy equivalence(form and content)and fuzzy translation(the combination of free and literal translation, fuzzy omissions and domestication)to deal with various forms of fuzziness caused by various factors,so that translation can truly become a medium of cultural communication, rather than a single language tools.
