Fengshan(FS) is an ancient rite that the emperors offer sacrifices to Heaven andEarth on Mountain Tai(M T)or other mountains. Recorded in Shiji·Fengshan bySima Qian "whenever it was prosperous, the emperor held FS to return thanks to God;whenever it was not, the emperor would cancel it." Therefore, FS is an unrivalled riteheld whenever it is prosperous, and filled with mystery and sovereignty, given manynew political and cultural meanings by later generations.From the First Emperor(Ying Zheng) to Emperor Songzhenzong (Zhao Heng),all the emperors, generals, prime ministers and mandarins, who held FS out of theirown concern. They compromised and cooperated with each other to help to bingabout the great rite. In the process of FS, every step was established after deepconsideration by the ruling classes, and full of connotations, not only manifested themajesty of Heaven and Earth, but propagated patriarchal clan rules, regulations, andmoral principles to the publics to enlighten and influence them.Emperor Zhenzong's FS embodyed the above meanings, and was given morenew spirits. MT is a political mountain, on which scholars climbed to speak theirmind freely. The process of Emperor Zhenzong's FS,enriched MT' cultrue, mouldedmany MT deities, and gradually ,the common .people accepted MT. Therefore, MTchanged into a folklore mountain step by step.
