Chinese opera and Western opera respectively represent the integrated form of drama and music in Eastern and Western cultures, and these two old artistic forms also display the different aesthetic requirements for drama and music of the two cultures with typical characteristics.In today's great fusion and communication of the world cultures, to learn more about the two representative artistic forms, Chinese opera and Western opera and to compare their characteristics, especially the characteristics in aesthetical expression is of great significance and value for the Eastern and Western cultures to communicate more in drama culture and then to improve the mutual reference and development of these two artistic forms.In recent years, the comparative study of Chinese opera and Western opera in the academic circle mainly focuses on the comparison of one aspect between these two artistic forms and also just suspends on some comparisons of forms. The study is general and lacks a more systemic and all-round research. Full of the love for the two artistic forms and based on the previous studies, this paper collects, studies and concludes the different characteristics of the two artistic forms. By comparing the performance characteristics of the two artistic forms and studying from the angle of aesthetic expression, this paper is designed to make some efforts on the communication of Eastern and Western cultures and also on the mutual reference of the two artistic forms.
