This essay discusses differences between Chinese traditional opera and western opera from two perspectives: the exterior factors and the exterior factors.First ,the exterior factors. The essay analyzes the difference between Chinese traditional opera and western opera in terms of language and music. Second, interior factors. It compares the essential differences between Chinese traditional opera and western opera in terms of similarity in spirit and similarity in form ,entertainment and sense, as well as virtual and reality. Based on the above analysis, the essay illustrates that Chinese traditional opera is art of virtual and freehand, while western opera is art of true-life, the mimic of action. Chinese traditional opera emphasizes expressing emotion, showing what characters are thinking on the stage .Western opera ,however, lays importance on presentation and narration, showing what characters are doing on the stage. The essay also gives a general introduction about the history, present situation of Chinese traditional opera and western opera, and about how they have blended and learned from each other.
