Opening-up to the outer world was an inevitable trend during the development of modern history of China. After the Qing Dynasty realized the interests of opening-up to the outer world, the opening ways of port begun to change form"commercial-opening"to"self-opening". Under such circumstances, Dandong became one of the first self-opening trade zones in Northeast in 1906. With the opening of Dandong, foreign trades developed fast, the economic structure, transportation and basic facilities of Dandong were imposed to step into the modernism by both the outer and the inner forces. Dandong hence started to develop from a frontier military town into a modern trade and manufacture city. This paper attempts to explore the evolution of structure and function of Dandong's modern city, and reveals the course and feature of Dandong's modernization, in order to supply the historical basis for the construction and development planning of Dandong, and fills up the research of the modern city in northeast of china.This paper is divided into following several parts:Preface: Introduce the research object, content and production of this research area.Part 1: Brief introduction of Dandong's history and conditions for the further development of Dandong during the modern history.Part 2: social background, related issues, ideas, practices and characteristics of opening Dandong as a trade zone.Part 3: analysis on the imposing force of opening Dandong as a trade zone from the perspectives of economic structure, transportation, basic facilities and culture and education.Part 4: analysis on the basic characteristics revealed during the modernization process of Dandong .
