Abstract/Summary:
Feminist consciousness is one of the important standards in the feminist criticism. By contrasting with the feminist theory and criticism, we will find that Chao Yu, the outstanding realistic playwright, has managed to portray a series of female images vividly. They are stemming from but surpassing the Chinese traditional culture and code of ethics, and they are the female images with the spontaneous feminist consciousness, who shouldered the traditional burden and also were influenced by new ideas and new culture. Chao Yu described their resistance and their awakening feminist consciousness, and reflected the ruin and humiliation suffered by the women in the old China by their images. All these indicate that Chao Yu has his own feminist consciousness, and they also display his insight into original culture, anxiety and eagerness to establish the new type of culture, as well as almighty and love to female lives and their emotion. Therefore, compared with the former, these characters have more artistic influence and ideological penetration.
