Independent University: The Chance Of Intellectual

This thesis analyzes contemporary novels on "university narratives" revealing that the development of the intellectual at university and mirrors the living state of Chinese intellectuals in different period. It mainly investigates on the system influencing on the intellectual at the university,where is considered as knowledge fortress.Since the modern university system appeared in China in late Ching dynasty,it had great and deep influence on the Chinese intellectual. The modern university system had been more consummated in the 20-30s(last) century. The Chinese modern intellectual were in the ascendant at universities. Although there were few novels describing campus life,the novelists' creations propagate the spirit of freedom,independence and criticism. After the founding of the people's republic,the new regime learnt from the mold of SULIAN,reforming the system of university. Under the leadership of the party,writers' lives were influenced greatly by consciousness formalize. They became losing their self-control. Culture became serving the politics. All these can be seen from the novels of university narratives. Cultural revolution was the worst hurt to university system and intellectuals.Since the new period,there was a new form of high educational system,the development trend of university was leaded by government and market. The intellectuals in college became more and more difficult to insist independence and criticism under the double pressure of rights and money. Writers reflect such situation from their creatures. Specially the novels of university narratives since 90s,they describe the state of the living condition of teachers and students in college,reflecting the decay of contemporary human spirit,revealing and criticizing the disadvantage of contemporary university system and the negative effects on the contemporary intellectuals.
