As studies of communicative exercises in TCSL are highly limited, the present thesis systematically investigates the productive communicative exercises in comprehensive and oral Chinese textbooks of intermediate and advanced level. The purpose of the study is to get an deeper understanding of the quantity, quality and types of the communicative exercises in current TCSL textbooks.Our results are three fold: (1) 8 types (with 20 subsidiary types) of communicative exercises are used in Chinese textbooks; (2) Among the 8 types of communicative exercises, Expression,, Discussion, and Sentence/Paragraph Completion are the three most used types in these textbooks and, (3) Real communicative exercises take about 10% of all communicative exercises and communicative exercises take about 30% of all exercises included in the textbooks in this study.A questionnaire survey was also carried out and the results indicate that (1) the learns are satisfied to these communicative exercises, as these exercises generally receive a score closer to 4 ( higher ); (2) Among the 8 types of communicative exercises, learns are more satisfied with Role play, Picture description and Sentence/Paragraph completion ; (3) Among the 20 subsidiary types of communicative exercises, learns are more satisfied to T1, T4, T6, T9, T10, T15, T17, T18 and T20.Some suggestions for the compilation of communicative exercises in TCSL are put forward to the end of the thesis.
