As an essential part of Chinese reading textbooks, exercises play a very important role in reading teaching process. In comparison with the importance, researches of reading exercises aren't enough. The main purpose of this study was to discover the feature of current reading exercises, analyze the affecting factors and attempt to assess them by applying the modern reading theories, pedagogy theories, and SLA theories etc.The subjects were eight sets reading textbooks, which were most typical and commonly used in the last 15years. The paper investigated three main aspects of the exercises design, including the content of the exercises, the type of the exercises which belongs to presentation techniques of the content, and the cognitive difficulty of the exercises. Hopefully, the findings of the study can provide some reference for the compiling and assessing of reading exercises in the textbooks.The main findings of this study are summarized as following:1. Vocabulary drills and details of the reading material are all attached importance, and discourse structure has an irregular treatment. All or most exercises are objective. All of above features indicate that current exercises mainly aim at testing the reading comprehension.2. The differences between textbooks are the focal point of vocabulary drills, the types of exercises involving expressing, and the proportion of language comprehension exercises etc.3. The cognitive difficulty stage of the reading exercises is basically scientific. In the last part of the thesis, on the research result, the author discussed the roles that the exercise should play in reading textbooks.
