With the opportunities brought by the changes of the modernsociety on the development of people's mentality, as well as thepotential threat it posed to their mental health, a higher demand hasbeen raised not only on the social support system but also thepsychological qualities of modernists. Therefore, it is of greatsignificance to do researches on the influence of social support andirrational belief on the mental health of college students.Research purpose: finding the inter relation of irrational belief,social support and metal health, also providing theory foundation andresearch reference on mental health education of university studentsby investing the status of social support and irrational belief ofuniversity students.Research methods: on the basis of considerable review work onrelated researches conducted at home and abroad, 376 college studentsgot involved in helping make and analyze a Social Support EvaluationMeasuring Table, an Irrational Belief Scale, a Chinese Mental HealthMeasurement Form, and a self—weaved questionnaire, with the helpof SPSS11.5 statistics software.Research results: a part of college students, especially poor oneswith more urgent needs, made a less satisfactory use of the socialsupport or suffered a lack of it. Social support and mental healthproblems are negative correlation and the correlation parameter is-0.278. Irrational belief and social support are negative correlationand the correlation parameter is -0.321. Irrational belief and mentalhealth problems are highly positive correlation and the correlationparameter is 0.560. It can be seen that both social support andirrational belief are the key factors to the mental health, with irrationalbelief, a direct restraint on the acquisition of social support and the state of mental health.Conclusion: attention should be paid to the social support tocollege students, especially psychologically, together with acombination of mental and material support to the poor ones. Duringuniversity education in mental health, great importance should beattached to the irrational belief and cognitive methods, through whichwe can promote the acquisition and availability of social support, andimprove the mental health.
