In recent one hundred years, in the progress of pentatonic harmoniesfrom origin to development, discussions on how to preserve thenational feature of harmonies and how to systematically combinetraditional major and minor harmonies with domestic pentatonic musicremain a hot topic. Bundles of musicians from Xiao youmei, Huang zi,Zhao Yuanren to He 1vting, Jiang dingxian, Zhang xiaohu, Li haiying,Zhao songguang, Sang tong, Luo zhongrong and fan zuyin invest lotsof time and energy on the research of this field. Great achievementsare obtained from their theoretical-aimed articles and directcoinage.Comprehending the national features of harmonies is considered asthe soul of pentatonic tones meanwhile harmonies skills remain keypoints on comprehending the national features involving bothpentatonism and modernism. In other words, we should skillfullyemploy some techniques of our national pentatonic music andreasonably modify the traditional harmonies skills. This thesis,aiming at the pentatonic harmonic features from the perspective ofsix aspects, consequently is an overall interpretation andconclusion on the relationship between the above mentioned skillsand the preservation of the pentatonic features of harmonies.This thesis also covers the origin and development of pentatonicharmonies since the process of harmonic "nationalization" is aflexuous and continuing course. Figuring out the track and reasonwill lay a concrete base for further development and coinage ofpentatonic harmonies.Pentatonic harmonies themselves are not a complete and well-regulated system yet. However, it grows up gradually and will bea fruitful tree in some day. Therefore, pragmatic or theoreticalresearch on pentatonic harmonies within the domain of national musichas some walues historically and realistically.
