Loss And Restoration Of The Information In The Gadfly Under The Manipulation Of Ideology In Literary Translation

Since 1970s translation studies have inclined to be a field of multiple studies, which break through the traditional linguistic and aesthetic level to a cultural one. In the last decade of the twentieth century, a large number of scholars began to study translation from different angles of culture, and then descriptive study of translation developed from the former prescriptive one, thus the study of translation has been deepened and broadened, and has become a field concerning different subjects and culture.In Lefevere's opinion, translation studies should be taken under a broad cultural condition and the translation should be paid more attention than the original text. It will bear no fruit if the study is only about the actual techniques in the process of translation. The essence of the task is to do the work from social and historical aspects. What's more, he emphasized again and again that translation is a kind of rewriting of the original text, and only in this way can the works live. Translation is under the control of the ideology. And sometimes it is the translator himself accepts it, but sometimes it is the patron who compel the translator to obedience. When the culture of the original text conflicts with the ideology of the target language, the translator or the patron will rewrite the text. In this way, the current ideology can either be strengthened or destroyed. Then we established a theory basis of regarding translation as a focus, instead of the original text. According to the theory of Lefevere, this research made a detailed comparative analysis of two Chinese versions of the gadfly,i.e. the one translated by Li Liangmin in 1953 and the one by Qing Xuexian in 1995 from the view of history and culture. To do this, we must acquaint us with some knowledge of the historical environment and cultural background ahead of a translator. Because which strategy to choose in translation depend more on the particular social background than on the linguistic degree.In the process of comparative analysis, we can see that many parts of the first version were deleted by the publisher and also some misunderstandings occurred in this version. Such rewritings have already been under discusssion, but is there any information lost and distorted in the process of rewriting? Then what will happen to the image of the original text and the main characters? Is there any information restored in the new translation? How should we understand the image of the text and the character? The aim of this essay is to analyse and explain the questions mentioned-above, which is the focus and significance of the research.
