The Role Of Ideology In The Manipulation Of Literary Translation

Despite the long history of ideological influence on translation, ideological approach to translation is a rather new one in translation studies. Traditional study on translation has generally been source-oriented, focusing on text comparison and translation criteria. Since the 1980s when Translation Studies Witnesses the "cultural turn", translation theorists begin to look at translation beyond the scope. They are involved in the study of broader issues such as culture, history, ideology and power etc.Based on the theory of rewriting, the thesis aims at exploring the influences that ideology has on literary translation. The study focuses on the ideological constraints that shape a literary translation through the case study of Lin Shu and Wei Yi's translation of Uncle Tom's Cabin.According to the evidence based on the researches that have been carried out by translation scholars, the thesis argues that during the process of translation, translators are inevitably influenced by social and cultural factors and ideology exerts pressures and constraints on translators and influences translators in aspects such as selection of source texts, translation strategies and translation motive etc.
