With the development of higher vocational colleges, the number of independent higher vocational colleges and enrolled students is increasing rapidly. English teaching has become a very important part in higher vocational college teaching. Since students'status is so different from that of the other ordinary colleges and universities, the traditional teaching approaches in English language teaching have to be innovated so as to solve the students'difficulties in English learning. One of the most difficult parts in English learning is vocabulary. While most of the higher vocational college students are lack of the knowledge of vocabulary learning strategies, which has become the greatest obstacle in their way of English learning, teachers should pay more attention to it and make vocabulary teaching the focus in English teaching. This thesis discusses the necessity of taking vocabulary teaching as the focus of English language teaching in higher vocational colleges and suggests that academic and semi-technical vocabulary should be included in vocabulary teaching in higher vocational colleges and that besides explicit teaching vocabulary teachers in higher vocational colleges should also teach the students vocabulary learning strategies. In this way, the students can improve their learning efficiency, which can arouse their interest in learning English and strengthen their confidence. This finally will improve their English learning.
