With the development of international business and multinational corporations, there is a growing need for efficient international business communication and translation. As the chief means of communication and business negotiation in international trade, foreign trade correspondence has been widespread used and highly regarded. On this account, it has become a vital issue concerning how to write, translate the English for foreign trade correspondence to convey the message accurately and faithfully. The thesis, therefore, attempts to make a tentative study on the translation of foreign trade correspondence based on the register theory. It consists of five chapters as following.Chapter one is an introduction to the study. As a vehicle for communication, English for foreign trade correspondence has its unique features.Chapter two is literature Review. The thesis has reviewed some related studies of Register theory put forward by experts at home and abroad. Then the author probes into the applicability of systemic functional linguistics in discourse analysis andtranslation study.Chapter three mainly explores the application of register theory to foreign trade correspondence by analyzing register characteristics from the perspective of field, tenor and mode.Chapter four mainly probes into the translation of foreign trade correspondence and proposes the translation standard of business English--faithfulness and exactness. The paper author points out that the Chinese version should try to achieve equivalence with the original text in function, namely, in the ideational, interpersonal and textual meaning of register.Chapter five is Conclusion. The register approach that applies to English for foreign trade correspondence provides a new perspective to business translation, which will play an increasingly important role in the cultural communication in the age of globalization.
