With the dramatic development of international commerce, foreign trade correspondence gains increasingly marked importance. Foreign trade correspondence in most cases is not only the principal communication vehicle between importers and exporters, but also plays a major role in exchanging information, doing business and achieving mutually beneficial goals.Briefly speaking, foreign trade correspondence refers to the letters between importers and exporters in the process of international trade. As a matter of fact, it is a derivation of letters used in the colonial age of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and belongs to the branch of applied written commercial texts. In the aspect of word choice and syntax, it presents distinctly unique features in using the abbreviation, the archaisms and sentences with politeness. To grasp these features is helpful for learners in reading and translating and for businessmen in a successful transaction as well. However, people take it for granted that foreign trade correspondence translation is an easy and simple job, provided that they acquire some basic linguistic competence and have available dictionaries. In fact, the translation requires an appropriate approach supported by a theoretical framework. In order to find a suitable theory to make an organized and analytical research into the translation of foreign trade correspondence, this thesis attempts to adopt German functionalist approaches as guidelines which help to develop a clear definition of the functions and purposes of foreign trade correspondence texts. This paper aims at finding out feasible skills from the angle of language and syntactic features. The study of foreign trade correspondence translation is meaningful and significant for both trade dealers and professional translators in China in the process of perfectly entering into business.
