One of the best writers of the stream-of-consciousness novels, Virginia Woolf was devoted to experimenting with novel writing techniques and developing new novel aesthetics.Woolf's fiction presents an aural dimension: the representation of sounds and musical attributes in her novels. This thesis makes use of the concept of"found-sound sampling"to focus on Woolf's inclusion of real-world sounds, and illustrate how Woolf deals with the connection between literature and music. The aurality of Woolf's novels is not only part of her formal strategy but also linked with her thematic concern. For Woolf, representing how the senses are affected by experience, even the most ordinary experience, is often more important than plot and character development. Woolf anxiously shares the aural experiences of war with her community. Her sense of community was strengthened as the English listened together to the sounds of war and shared the experience.Woolf's experimentation with sound and music in her fiction attests to her status as a great modernist writer.
