These days, with the increasing enrollment of higher vocational education, the quality of the recruitment is decreasing and the gap of level between students is widening. As the students are quite different in their emotional attitude, English basis, learning strategies and abilities, English teachers find it hard to teach students in accordance with their aptitude. In order to resolve the problem and help each student get full development, educators are engaged in researches and try hard to find out new teaching methods, and graded-teaching approach is among these methods.Graded-teaching of English is a new teaching approach based on the theories of pedagogy and linguistics, such as Vygotskey's "Zone of proximal development" and Krashen's theory of "i+1", etc. By this approach, teachers reform the traditional teaching organization forms and methods, divide the students from the same class into several different levels according to their English basis and learning abilities, and teach them with different teaching objectives, different contents and different strategies so as to guarantee the best teaching effects. This paper is based on the experiment which the author made on graded-teaching of English in the higher vocational institute where she is working—Hunggang Science & Technology Vocational Institute. The 146 objects of experiment who come from the Software Technical Discipline of 2006 Computer Department are divided into three classes according to their English basis and learning abilities. The experiment methods consist of observation, survey and test. With the experiment, the author expects to find out the effects of graded-teaching.The experiment study shows that graded-teaching helps meet the different needs of students of different levels, and helps solve the conflicts between "catering to all" and "suiting teaching students in accordance with their aptitude". It also helps promote students' study interest and achievement, and moreover, it's helpful to cultivate and develop students' abilities in self-learning, self-development and enhance the teacher-student relationship. To sum up, the graded-teaching approach is feasible and superior; it can be employed in the teaching of English in higher vocational institute.
