With the internationalization of Chinese economy, the employment market’s demand for English proficiency has been on the increase, but the teaching time of the English course in higher vocational schools is shrinking. Thus how to maximize the potential sources and meet the employment market becomes a key issue that scholars need to address. The present thesis incorporates input theory and proximal development theory to explore the feasibility and the effectiveness of English graded teaching in higher vocational colleges.Among the 465 freshmen(enrolling in 2014) whose major is mechanical and electrical engineering, we choose some of them as experimental objects to conduct T test. According to the zone of proximal development theory, we select 119 students who are from A, B, C three classes to carry out the study, and according to the "i+1" theory and the theory of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, different teaching content and teaching methods are adopted to these students, and different teaching requirements are put forward.This research makes the following findings: the graded teaching is successful despite some disadvantages. It meets the needs of students of different learning and it can help teachers to become researchers, and it can also improve students’ academic performance. The disadvantages are that it may cause the lack of example for students and easily make students and teachers have some negative thoughts. Besides, it may increase the difficulty of teaching management and the self-esteem of students in class C may suffer some harm. This article finally proposes some practical suggestions for the reform of English teaching in higher vocational education.
