The second language acquisition, in terms of its format, is the process in which errors can't be avoided, but as a matter of fact, it is a process in which EFL learners' cognition would vary with their 2L acquisition progress. The theory of interlanguage, based on the cognition psychology, provides the explanations and makes the analysis of 2L learners' errors that are reasonable and acceptable. The theory can be also applied to English writing and would be of much help in improving the teaching of English writing. According to the interlanguage theory, 2L acquisition is a creative process of constructing a system in which learners are consciously testing hypotheses about the target language from a number of possible sources of knowledge, and they will make advances in achieving the proficiency of the target language with the development of their cognition. The thesis is a research report based on the study on English writing. With the interlanguage theory as its theoretical guidance, the author puts forward the new teaching approaches. The research focuses on the English writing with college students as its subjects. The quantitative research method is adopted in order to find the causes that affect learners' writing. The new approaches are tested to make sure if they are acceptable and can be helpful to the learner's cognition development, if they are effective in improving English writing and if they are worthwhile for further application. The research results prove that the application of interlanguage theory to the teaching practice has taken effects in improving the learners' English writing in the experiment. The research is characterized by its centering on learners, that is, much more attention should be paid to learners. Learners will have a better understanding of errors by being well taught the interlanguage theory, which will help them keep more confidence and positive attitude toward English writing. In respect of teaching, teachers will play a more important role in monitoring and controlling the development of learners' interlanguage for the purpose of bettering learners' English writing proficiency.
