"Imagines"is the important characteristic of Chinese traditional expression and plastic arts, which forms the basis of thought way method of national aesthetics and painting. By analyzing painting theorem and certain works, character of Chinese traditional portraiture is expounded. The character is keeping basic resemblance, not whole resemblance; expression the main point, not the image of the whole former. By mastering shape and spirit of model, preference of self aesthetic is quested for. In traditional Chinese painting, the figure is depicted not only by his shape but also by his spirit. It differs from abstractionism and representationalism because it emphasizes sprit without abandoning the shape. In other words, it shows not only the correspondence of subjectivity and objectivity, but also that of feeling and substance, so it is the hybrid of vision and esse. All that makes this excellence traditional Chinese arts standing erectly in the arts of world. However, the imitation of the shape are emphasized in more and more paintings in the educations of Chinese traditional painting which is based on western charcoal drawing. That leads to the lost of character of Chinese traditional painting since traditional Chinese paintings prefer spirit other than shape. To some extend, rediscovering of traditional plastic method, space time concept and aesthetics thought way will inspire rebuilding Sinitic plastic arts and creating of Chinese painting.
