Bron 1942 in Guangdong China, Kan Tai-keung was affected by the grandfather when his childhood, he began to be fond of drawing. Kan moved to Hong Kong in 1957.After spending ten years as apprentice and tailor, he took up design studies in applied design course at the Department of Extramural Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong. From 1967, Kan started his career as designer, the awards he received had brought him to immediate prominence. In 1976, he founded his own design company, his work were highly appreciated and became an international renowned designer. He was the only Chinese selected by Japan's prestigious design magazine IDEA as one of 100 World's Graphic Designer, and his design works were collected by many museum all of the world.Kan also infatuated by arts. He is good at modern ink and wash painting and public sculpture. His artworks are focused attention upon fully with the art world.Kan takes an active role in educating and promoting art and design as a profession. He lectures frequently in Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas institutions, acting as advisors for associations and adjudicates at competitions. Kan has written many books on design principles. From 2003, Kan became the dean of Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, Shantou University. His significance and influential role has won him a distinctive position in design world.The article not only analyzed the life experience of Kan, but also researched Kan's design style changes: From Western Style to Modernized Folk style, finally to Modernized oriental thoughts. And researched Kan's design thoughts: what's the essence of design; the design idea originates from life; the philosophic theory of design in oriental thoughts and traditional culture; the source of originality. Moreover, the article analyzed and read Kan's poster works.Kan is the best model who has bridged the gap between the Chinese tradition culture and Western culture. Through the research on Kan Tai-keung, this paper would offer a sample to the development of modern design in China.
