This paper is a study on the E-C translation of set clauses of English business contracts from the functional equivalence perspective, intended especially for translators who are not familiar with English business contracts and for persons who have interest in them. This paper first of all gives an introduction of previous studies on equivalence and contract translation, pointing out their deficiencies, based on which the author tried successfully to adopt a new approach. Thus he establishes a theoretical framework, based on Nida's functional equivalence theory, to probe into the translation of English business contracts through the familiarity with their set clauses. In order for the readers to have a general idea of the language used in English business contracts before going further to the translation itself, an introduction to the stylistic features of English business contracts follows. By giving a great number of examples, the author is able to unveil the mystery of English business contract for the readers. Finally, the author analyses the translation of set clauses of English business contracts at lexical, syntactic and clause level from the perspective of functional equivalence through a great number of real-life examples, so that the readers may have some ideas or command to a certain degree of the translation of English business contracts.English business contracts play a very important role in economic activities and business transactions, as does their translation. Hopefully, this paper may contribute to the aforesaid.
