Edward Benjamin Britten(1913-1976) was an outstanding musician prominent in the nineteenth century in Britain. He had British music propelled to a pinnacle of prosperity after Henry Purcell, in the meanwhile contributed a significant milestone for British Opera in the world. Not only had his works evolved with different styles but also with variant of contents, which showed his extraordinary understandings on the social functions of music.There are three parts in this dissertation, in which part two introduces the period that had significant influences on Britten's music as well as his life. In part three, emphasized analysis is on his two masterpieces-- <> and <> , which reflected the remarkable succession of Britten to the British music; also they indicated his imploration for the peace and social functions of music.
