Most idioms have a long history, and many characteristics of ancient Chinese are kept in those idioms, especially the traits of ancient characters and the meaning of some ancient words. At present, there are many researches on Chinese idioms. Some are on the definition and confine of"idiom", some are on the application of idioms, some are on the civilization of idioms and some are the researches on the idioms in monographs. In this thesis, the author will concentrate on the characters that form the idioms.There are four chapters in this thesis. In the first chapter, the author gives a commentary of current researches on Chinese idioms. In the second chapter, the researches are mainly on the JIA JIE ZI and CI BEN YI using in idioms and the relations between the whole idiom and the characters in it, for example, in an idiom, how the characters affect the meaning of the whole idiom. In the third chapter, the author makes researches on the differences and affiliations between the ancient Chinese and modern Chinese that revealed in idioms. It's very common that some words in idioms are changed in advertisements and literature works, and the meaning and forms of some idioms have also been changed, so in the last chapter, the research is on the evolutions of idioms, such as the remodification and derivative of idioms.The examples given in this thesis are from"Xinhua Idiom Dictionary"(Shangwu Yinshu Guan, 2004) .
